Higgins/Grist for RT10!!!
Yes the rumours are true - None other than Mark Higgins and Nicky Grist have confirmed their availability for RT10! 3-Time British Rally Champion Mark Higgins will sit in the driver's seat of a Grp N Mitsubishi Evo IX and have the legendary Nicky Grist calling notes for him. Flat over Crest will be the call flying through the Bronte and Cedar Hill stages as 40 confirmed competitors line up for Rally Trinidad 2010.
Although it did not take a lot of convincing to get the Brits to agree to come to the sweet TnT to rally - it did take quite a bit of logistical planning. What we thought was a done deal with Higgins/Grist being able to pilot a certain new Evo IX in the island took a bit of a twist when it was discovered that the car in question may be driven by a new local driver instead. Some quick thinking resulted in John Powell's older Evo IX currently owned by Dean Serrao (who will take on RT10 in the Ex-Paul Bourne Subaru S9). If you are getting confused over the back and forth its understandable; there have been many new cars and drivers coming into the mix in the last few weeks which shows the ever-growing popularity of local rallying. Anyways back to the story Higgins/Grist a team with a rally resume that is too long to list will be the latest addition to a record breaking number of cars entered into Rally Trinidad (in its present format since 2004). Higgins who has raced in Barbados and Jamaica (and has actually taught Powell, Bourne, and Serrao) is not only the 3-time British Rally Champion but actually knows the strengths and weaknesses of the entire field of WRC drivers. Although he will be attempting to win in a Grp N car, Higgins will have the world's most recognizable Co-driver in his passenger seat. A man with 21 WRC Event wins and a WRC Championship to his name will grace our shores and our rally. In his extremely successful career Grist has sat next to the likes of Armin Shwarz and Juha Kankkunen before joining Colin McRae in what would be one of the most famous World Rally duos ever. For any rally fan Trinidad will be the place to be come March 27 when Higgins/Grist attempt to run down 3 WRC cars and another 7 Group A cars. Who knows what will happen but be sure to ask yourself one thing - will you be one of those who see it live or have to read about it after?
As they say stay tuned!
